Tijani Onwenu, son of the legendary Nigerian singer Onyeka Onwenu, has paid tribute to his late mother as he marks the first anniversary of her passing.
Onyeka Onwenu, who passed away at the age of 72, reportedly collapsed while performing at Stella Okolie’s 80th birthday celebration in Lagos on July 31, 2024. She was rushed to Reddington Hospital, where she was later confirmed dead.
Remembering his mother a year later, Tijani shared a brief yet touching message:
A year ago today.
RIP mom
July 30, 2024.”
Since her passing, tributes have continued to pour in from notable figures in the entertainment industry. Singer Omawumi shared a candlelight photo with a broken heart emoji, while actress Regina Askia also expressed grief over her death. Fuji star Malaika offered prayers for her soul, and Nollywood actress Genevieve Nnaji penned an emotional note, saying her tears wouldn’t stop because accepting the reality of Onyeka’s death meant the end of her hopeful delusion that it was all just a bad dream.
Precious Chikwendu, former wife of politician Femi Fani-Kayode, described Onyeka Onwenu as an “elegant stallion” and “an Amazon of great character and dignity,” thanking her for the support she gave during a crucial time in her life.
