Toni Payne Criticizes EFCC’s Focus on Naira Abuse Amid Nigeria’s Challenges

Nigerian photographer Toni Payne has publicly criticized the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for summoning celebrities over alleged naira abuse at social events.

Taking to social media, Payne questioned the EFCC’s priorities, lamenting that the agency is focusing on minor issues while the nation faces critical challenges like hunger, unemployment, and erratic power supply.

Payne expressed frustration over the commission’s perceived trivial pursuits, including the spraying of money during celebrations—a cultural tradition in Nigeria. She described it as an attempt to suppress joyful traditions and urged Nigerians to consider hosting destination events outside the country to avoid harassment.

“Naija has the most messed up priorities. Out of all the problems facing the country, spraying of money is their issue? People are starving, there is no steady power supply, and jobs are scarce. What is the goal?” Payne wrote.

She also referenced actress Iyabo Ojo’s cautious approach to spraying money at her daughter’s wedding, noting that despite her efforts to comply with regulations, she was still summoned by the EFCC.

The EFCC has recently targeted several Nigerian celebrities for alleged naira abuse, sparking public debate:

  • Ayo Makun (AY) revealed he was invited for questioning but was pardoned after the EFCC verified that the money sprayed was not tied to criminal activity. He urged Nigerians to respect the naira and avoid acts that undermine its integrity.

  • Iyabo Ojo confirmed her invitation, explaining that the EFCC educated her on the legal boundaries concerning the naira.

  • E-Money was arrested last month for allegedly spraying U.S. dollars at an event, violating the Foreign Exchange Act.

  • Cubana Chief Priest was arrested last year for tampering with the naira at a social gathering.

  • Bobrisky faced a six-month jail sentence for naira abuse after pleading guilty and promising to use his platform to educate his followers.

Payne’s criticism has reignited conversations about the EFCC’s priorities and the broader socio-economic issues plaguing Nigeria. Many believe that while preserving the integrity of the naira is essential, the government should focus on addressing more pressing concerns affecting the majority of citizens.
