Nollywood actress Tonto Dikeh has made a bold appeal to Yoruba people on social media, urging them to use English when engaging in online arguments.
In an Instagram story, the actress explained that using English would make it easier for people to determine the winner of social media fights, especially on platforms like WhatsApp and Instagram.
In her post, Tonto humorously said,
Dear Yoruba people, Abeg, when una dey try to fight (especially for this Obasanjo app), make una try dey fight with English. Omo Language, language everywhere. How we want take know who dey win fight.” She also extended the request to Ghanaians, encouraging them to do the same, as it would simplify things for everyone involved. “Ghana people una dey this WhatsApp group too. Make una dey fight with English,” she added, signing off with, “All love from a vawulence prefect.”
Tonto’s appeal comes two years after actress Destiny Etiko made a similar request to her Yoruba colleagues, urging them to adopt English or Pidgin as a means of improving communication in the industry. Destiny, an Igbo actress, had highlighted how reliance on regional dialects created a communication gap, especially when interacting with others outside their native language circle.
Tonto has been active on social media with various important messages. In December, she warned Nigerians about a new scam method where people falsely accuse others of making fake transactions in public to create a scene and pressure them into paying. Tonto advised her followers to stay vigilant in such situations.
As the new year began, Tonto emphasized her priority to protect her family above all else. She expressed her readiness to defend them, stating, “I’m ready for war if anyone wants to declare war over them.” She also made it clear that she would not entertain foolishness or negativity.
