Kayleigh Scott, a 25-year-old transgender flight attendant who appeared in a United Airlines campaign about transgender awareness, was found dead at her home in Denver, Colorado on March 20, after sharing a heartbreaking post on social media.
Kayleigh Scott’s Instagram and Facebook posts, shared hours before she died, apologized to those she felt she had let down. She also expressed regret for not being able to be stronger for those who loved her. She concluded the post with the words, “Brianna, I’m coming,” referring to her friend Brianna Moore who died by suicide in February 2016 at the age of 15.
Initially, there were messages of support and offers of help from friends to Ashley’s family. However, Scott’s sister Ashley confirmed several hours later that she had passed away. Scott’s death is a tragic reminder of the continued struggles that many transgender people face. This includes and is not limited to mental health challenges and a higher risk of suicide.
Scott’s appearance in United Airlines’ transgender awareness campaign garnered widespread attention and praise. Many applauded the airline’s efforts to support diversity and inclusion. However, her death highlights the ongoing need for greater awareness and support for transgender individuals in all aspects of society.
