TVC presenter Akashat Nymat has expressed disapproval over music superstar Davido’s remarks on Africa’s economy during a recent interview.
The singer had advised black Americans against relocating to Africa, citing the continent’s struggling economy. While clarifying that he wasn’t discrediting Africa, Davido explained his intent to highlight its brighter sides while excluding the slums.
Reacting on the TVC show Your View, Akashat Nymat criticized Davido’s statements, arguing that American celebrities rarely disparage their country abroad. She questioned the singer’s contributions to ordinary Nigerians, urging him to be more cautious in his comments about the nation that contributed to his fame.
If he can show me two or three companies where he is producing essential goods like rice or beans for Nigerians, then he has earned the right to such statements,” Nymat stated.
She emphasized that celebrities like Davido hold influence and must use it responsibly to inspire hope rather than discourage investment in Africa.
Former presidential aide Reno Omokri also criticized Davido, questioning how the economy could be in “shambles” when fellow Nigerian artist Wizkid continues to break streaming records. Omokri cited Rihanna as an example of a celebrity who positively promotes her homeland, Barbados, to the world.
In defense of Davido, Nigerian show promoter Paulo Okoye acknowledged the truth in the singer’s remarks, highlighting the dire economic challenges Nigeria faces. Okoye urged Nigerians to confront reality and work collectively toward a better future.
Davido took to X (formerly Twitter) to address the backlash, asserting his position as a “real ambassador” and expressing pride in his delivery during the controversial interview. Despite the criticism, he remained unapologetic, stating, “Y’all mad ’cause we the Real Ambassadors. The way my accent be for that interview dey sweet me.”
