Wole Soyinka Raises Alarm on Effects of Technology and Social Media

Nobel laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka has voiced his deep concerns regarding the negative consequences stemming from the misuse of technology and social media, expressing alarm that these powerful tools are now in the hands of what he calls “ignoramuses.”

According to The Nation, Wole Soyinka addressed these issues during a recent event held in Lagos on Friday, June 16. He emphasized that the improper utilization of technology is rapidly pushing humanity backwards, mainly due to the prevalence of profiling and the rampant use of abusive language in online spaces.

While admitting that he is not an avid user of social media, Soyinka shared his reservations regarding these platforms, stating,

“I don’t tweet, I don’t WhatsApp. I tried WhatsApp, but I stopped.”

Soyinka’s criticism highlights the need for responsible and mindful engagement with technology. He raises pertinent questions about the impact of social media on human interaction. Furthermore, it highlights the dangers of a culture that thrives on profiling individuals and resorting to disrespectful or harmful language.
