In an interview with Biola Bayo, Adeyemi Elesho, popularly known as Yemi Elesho, revealed that he had no idea veteran Yoruba actor Baba Elesho was his father until he was about 10 years old. According to him, his mother pointed out his father while they were watching a movie together.
Yemi recalled running away from home to Lagos in search of his father. At the time, he left a letter for his mother telling her not to look for him and lied to a relative that his mother had passed away.
I started doing skits before we even knew they were called skits. Growing up as Baba Elesho’s son wasn’t smooth because I didn’t know he was my dad until I was 10. One day, my mum pointed to him on TV and said, ‘That’s your father.’
I once ran away from home wearing just a black T-shirt and bathroom slippers. I left a letter for my mum saying she shouldn’t look for me because I was going to Lagos to see my dad,” Yemi recounted.
He also gave a special shout-out to entertainer Yhemo Lee, praising him for always covering bills whenever they hang out.
Yemi Elesho further reflected on his humble beginnings, revealing how he sold Aboniki, face towels, and bread to survive before his comedy skits gained popularity. He credited skitmaker Woli Agba for playing a big role in helping him kick-start his career.
The comedian also spoke fondly of award-winning singer Asake, sharing how he supported him during tough times.
Asake had nothing back then, and I used to take him to Bawee to buy him food. I can’t say too much now because social media will say I’m bragging, but it’s the truth. Back then, I even sent a DM to Chris Brown,” he said.
Over the years, Yemi Elesho has transitioned from a struggling youth into a successful comedian and content creator, making a name for himself in Nollywood and skit-making.
