Nollywood actor Yemi Solade has responded to the intense criticism following his appearance in a loved-up video with colleague Sanusi Izihaq, popularly known as Apa.

The controversial video, shared by actor Rotimi Salami, was a promotional clip for the movie 5 Alive. In the scene, Yemi Solade is seen cuddling Apa, pecking him on the cheek, and holding him in a tight embrace. The video quickly drew backlash, with many accusing the actors of promoting and influencing gay themes in Nollywood.

One critic took it further by questioning Yemi Solade’s mental health, writing in Yoruba,

Mo sorry but ara yin o ya” (“I’m sorry, but your mind is not okay”). Yemi Solade clapped back fiercely, responding in Yoruba with an insult directed at the troll’s father: “Ori Baba e to wa ni Ogba were lo ri ba wi” (“It’s your father who belongs in a mental institution”).

This isn’t the first time Nollywood actors have faced scrutiny over perceived LGBTQ+ themes. In October, Dieko Afolayan, son of celebrated filmmaker Kunle Afolayan, sparked controversy after sharing a video of himself acting femininely and holding a lady’s bag. The clip stirred debates, with many criticizing his behavior while others defended his freedom of expression.

Earlier in the year, Peter Obi’s son, Oseloka Obi, also faced public scrutiny after appearing in a gay publication. The incident reignited discussions about LGBTQ+ representation and societal norms in Nigeria.

Yemi Solade has also faced unrelated controversies in the past. A woman accused him of sending her inappropriate pictures on Facebook, calling him a pervert despite his public image as a family man. The accusation shocked fans, further adding to the actor’s history of public drama.
