The ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) maintains a majority in the Senate after winning four seats in last Saturday’s by-election. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) held by-elections in seven senatorial constituencies in Yobe, Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara and Plateau states which had earlier been declared inconclusive.

After the February 25 general election, the ruling APC secured 55 seats. This makes it a total of 59 senators elected on the APC platform.

At least eight parties will be represented in the 10th National Assembly. By extension, this is one of the most diverse elections in federal electoral history. The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) secured 36 seats. The Labour Party (LP) has eight and the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP) has two seats.

In the Senate, the Social Democrats (SDP) won two, while the Youth Progressive Party (YPP) and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) won one seat each.
