Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi has ordered the immediate arrest of Isyaku Katanga, chairman of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), in Kiyawa Local Government Area.
The governor issued directives during an unplanned visit to input distribution centres for the 2025 wheat planting initiative in Kiyawa and Birninkudu local government areas.
This followed allegations by several farmers that the AFAN chairman had illegally increased the official amount to be paid by each farmer by two thousand naira.
According to the Governor:
“We received complaints of alleged extortion of money from farmers. We will not accept this and whoever is involved must refund it back to farmers.”
Governor Namadi consequently asked the police to arrest and investigate the suspect, as well as to reclaim the money gathered from the farmers.
He also promised to guarantee that the complete package is distributed to registered farmers as ordered by the federal government.
Governor Namadi voiced worry about the delay and inadequate preparations made by agro-dealers tasked with distributing farm supplies to dry-season wheat farmers across the state.
He urged stakeholders to guarantee that registered farmers received their allocations on time so that they could begin preparations for dry-season wheat production.
