Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, former governor of Borno State, has asserted that Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, is set to rejoin the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Sheriff claimed during an appearance on Channels Television on Monday, citing undisclosed sources that suggest Obi’s imminent return to his former party.
Obi, who served as Anambra State governor under the PDP, left the party in 2022 to pursue his presidential ambition with the Labour Party. Currently, he is part of a coalition of opposition figures strategising to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.
The coalition had initially aligned with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform, but internal ambitions—including those of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi—have raised doubts about its cohesion.
Sheriff dismissed the ADC’s viability, stating, “As far as this politics is concerned, ADC doesn’t exist. Give the party three months and it will die down.” He further claimed, “The information available to me is that at any moment from now, Peter Obi will go back to PDP and run as a presidential candidate under PDP.”
The former governor also expressed confidence in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) retaining power in 2027, citing its established political structures. His remarks add to growing speculation about Obi’s next move as opposition alliances continue to shift ahead of the next general elections. While Obi has yet to publicly respond to Sheriff’s claims, the statement underscores the fluid nature of Nigeria’s political landscape and the ongoing realignments within opposition ranks.
