Twenty-eight people were killed in road accidents in Niger and Bauchi states on Monday. Niger’s Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Sector Commander, Kumar Tsukwam said 24 people were killed in a traffic accident in Etsu Oro village along Kutigi-Mokwa Road in Lavun LGA of the state.
A truck lost control due to excessive speeding as it was heading from Zaria to Lagos with 87 people on board loaded with luggage, he said.
24 people were confirmed dead at the scene of the accident and the injured were taken to Kuchigi General Hospital for treatment. Furthermore, he reported that the accident, an isolated incident, occurred along the Bida-Mokwa road at 10:10 p.m
Also, the FRSC Sector Commander in Bauchi State, Yusuf Abdullahi, confirmed that four people were killed and five others injured in a road crash which occurred on Monday at kilometre 15, near Bagel Bridge along Bauchi-Dass Road.
He said in a telephone interview that the accident involved a commercial Galaxy Ford with registration number MSA 72 XD. The vehicle had nine passengers on board.
He said the vehicle belonged to the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).
Abdullahi explained that five people sustained various degrees of injuries including bruises and fractures. He also added that the crash was caused by the loss of control by the driver whose identity is unknown.
Furthermore, the police arrived at the scene and evacuated the victims to the General Hospital in Dass. They are receiving treatment in the hospital. However, a medical doctor confirmed four of the victims dead.
He added that the vehicle was taken away by the Nigeria Police Force Motor Transport Department, Dass Division.
