The federal government says evacuation of Nigerians in Sudan is currently not possible. Nigerians trapped in the ongoing crisis in Sudan are seeking refuge.

Before the end of the Ramadan celebrations, the fighting between the opposing factions of the two generals has shown no signs of abating.

Since the fighting erupted on Saturday between forces loyal to Sudan’s army chief, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and his deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, who commands the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the death toll has continued to rise. Furthermore, it has now surpassed 300 people.

Over 1,262 Nigerian students appealed to the federal government to evacuate them from the Republic of Sudan.

In a statement released on Friday from Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman/CEO of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, said that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has put plans to evacuate Nigerian students and other stranded Nigerians.

The Nigeria Mission in Sudan and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) made arrangements. However, due to the tense situation in Sudan, it is currently impossible to fly a plane as it could be very dangerous.

According to a statement by Gabriel Odu of the Media, Public Relations, and Protocols Unit at NIDCOM, Dabiri-Erewa cited the burning down of planes parked at the country’s airport on Friday morning.

She said humanitarian groups are looking for ways to get people food, water and medicine.

“The Chairman/CEO, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa has said while the Nigerian Mission in Sudan and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), have put in place arrangements to evacuate Nigerian students and other Nigerian citizens stranded in Sudan, the tensed situation makes it gravely risky and impossible for any flights at this point in time, noting that Aircrafts parked at the Airport in the country were burnt yesterday morning.”

“She therefore appealed to the fighting Parties to consider the Juba Peace Agreement enunciated by Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), as fundamental mechanism for the restoration of peace and tranquility in the country.”
