Heavy rains destroyed properties in the Labba Kuka community, Gujba Local Government Area, Yobe State, confirming the death of three people and forcing the evacuation of 271 households.

Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) announced on Sunday via its verified Facebook page.

The Agency noted that its flood response team had jointly assessed the area with the Councilor and community leaders representing Mutai Ward to determine the extent of the damage caused.

The Agency also noted that it had ordered the Guziba local government authority to prioritize providing water and basic primary medical care to address the plight of displaced persons.

SEMA’s Statement:

A total of 271 households with over 1,600 individuals were affected and have been profiled.

Sadly, three persons died with nine others sustaining injuries as a result of the flood incident

SEMA will follow up with Bagoja Hospital and ensure victims received treatment with government support.

SEMA will intensify resource mobilisation and provide immediate support to the affected victims. Humanitarian actors working in the affected communities would be mobilized to key in to complement Government effort.

The state humanitarian agency reported that they buried the deceased and referred the injured individuals to a neighbouring hospital in Bajoga, Gombe State, for medical attention.

SEMA has committed to continue stakeholder engagement at the municipal level for seasonal flood mitigation and prevention by NIMET and NEMA early warning signs.
