Following continuing verification of civil officials and other public workers in the state, the Abia State Government says it had saved over N200 million on monthly salary bills.

Njum Onyemenam, the State Accountant General, stated that a consolidated payment system resulted in significant savings.

Onyemenam, speaking yesterday following a meeting with state Governor Dr. Alex Otti, said the verification process was still underway and that the administration hoped to save additional money.

According to the Accountant General, “so far, we have been able to save N220 million from the ongoing verification of workers in the state, local governments, and pensioners.

“Not less than 2,300 ghost names have been weeded out of the payrolls, using the unified payment system and we hope to still identify more as we continue with the exercise.”

She stated that, in accordance with Governor Otti’s direction, the government paid the arrears of April salary left over by the previous administration, as well as June pensions to retirees, last week.

Local government employees who were not paid in June because they did not submit a validated payment plan will get their paychecks this week, according to Onyemenam.
