The Trade Union Congress, TUC, reiterated on Wednesday that the organised labour’s scheduled indefinite strike will not be called off.
The Trade Union Congress and the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, on Tuesday, announced that the country’s economy will be shut down beginning October 3 in order to force their demands on the Federal Government.
Organised labour is requesting that the government implement steps to alleviate the suffering caused by the elimination of the gasoline subsidy.
A series of discussions between the unions and the administration have resulted in a stalemate.
TUC President, Festus Osifo stated on Arise TV on Wednesday that the strike is the final resort, claiming that organised labour has exhausted all other options for pressing for its objectives.
President Bola Tinubu, according to Osifo, has had ample time to devise palliatives to mitigate the impact of the subsidy removal.
He stated:
“Strike is always our last resort and that is why we embarked on this long journey. It was about four months ago that the fuel subsidy was removed.
“For any government that’s concerned about the plight of the people, four months is sufficient time for them to have designed a framework for the way forward.
“So for the House of Representatives that said we should be patient, we have earlier met with the Senate President who promised us that he was going to meet with the President and get back to us in one week but up till now, we have not heard from him.
“We have exhausted all the tools we have and that is why we are deploring the last option.”
