The Lagos State government on Sunday sealed some markets within the Trade Fair Complex in the Ojo Local Government Area due to alleged environmental pollution. These markets included the Auto Spare Parts and Machinery Dealers Association and the Balogun Business Association markets, among others.

As part of the ongoing crackdown on violations of environmental laws in the state, representatives of the Lagos Waste Management Authority, the Lagos Task Force on Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences, and the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps carried out the enforcement.

The Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources’ Director of Public Affairs, Kunle Adeshina, confirmed the news on his X handle (formerly Twitter) on Sunday. He claimed that the agencies carried out the enforcement in accordance with the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources’, Tokunbo Wahab, directive.

Adeshina said:

“Following the directives of Honourable Commissioner, Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, LAWMA, on Sunday, October 22, 2023, shut ASPAMDA, BBA and other markets within the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex.

“The enforcement was carried out by officials of Lagos Waste Management Authority in partnership with Lagos Task Force on Environmental Sanitation and Special Offenses and Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps for poor waste disposal practices, non-payment for waste disposal and general environmental sanitation infractions.”
