Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang has announced that his administration would reinstate the student farm ownership scheme that was used in secondary schools.
The scheme which began at Gindiri compound schools by Christian missionaries in the early 1950s, was a practise in which pupils were given plots of land to produce food crops and rear cattle.
The practice was eventually abandoned.
Mutfwang, an alumnus of Boys Secondary School, Gindiri, said reintroducing the scheme across all secondary schools in the state would not only encourage students to develop an interest in agriculture but also enable them to leverage it as a business venture in the future during the reunion service of the Gindiri Compound schools in Gindiri, Mangu Local Government Area of the state.
The governor, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Samuel Jatau, emphasised that the gesture would also boost food security and that his administration will continue to lead in accordance with the institution’s slogan, “For Light and Truth.”
He asked for prayers and support for governments at all levels and said that the administration would continue to provide services to the state’s people without prejudice.
