Barcelona President Joan Laporta has confirmed the club’s intention to secure a new midfielder during the January transfer window to fill the void left by the unfortunate injury to Pablo Gaviria, ruled out for the season due to an anterior cruciate ligament tear suffered while on international duty with Spain.
Despite previous reports suggesting financial constraints, Laporta clarified that Barcelona aims to pursue a loan deal, drawing parallels to the successful acquisition of Edgar Davids in the 2003-04 season. Laporta expressed optimism, stating, “If we manage to make the fair play work [with La Liga], the idea is to have another midfielder to compensate for the loss of Gavi.”
In the larger context of Barcelona’s financial challenges, Laporta acknowledged the difficulties but also hinted at ongoing negotiations, stating, “I think before the end of the year we can create the space for a couple of deals we are working on.” This news comes as Barcelona faces Almeria in their final game of 2023, hoping to overcome recent struggles and close the gap on league leaders Real Madrid.
In a separate development, amidst financial constraints, Barcelona is set to sign 18-year-old forward Vitor Roque in a deal worth €35 million in January.
