The Supreme Court upheld Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s election as Governor of Lagos State.
The tribunal and the state’s Appeal Court both upheld Sanwo-Olu’s victory.
Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the Labour Party candidate in the election, bases his case on Sanwo-Olu’s qualification as running partner.
He said Obafemi Hamzat, the deputy governor, had surrendered his Nigerian citizenship.
The court also confirmed that Sanwo-Olu’s deputy is a Nigerian by birth.
The court emphasised that the renouncement of citizenship of a citizen by birth must be registered by the Nigerian president, and that the appellant failed to submit proof to that effect.
The court, however, denied the Labour Party Candidate’s appeal for lack of merit.
Abdulazeez Adediran, also known as Jandor, of the PDP, complained that the name Sanwo-Olu presented to INEC differed from that on his WAEC certificate.
The Supreme Court dismissed the appeal as “academic”.
The dismissal of the appeal and that of the Labour Party indicates that Sanwo-Olu is the legitimately elected governor of Lagos State.
