The Federal Capital Territory’s (FCT) insecurity situation is concerning, according to Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Akpabio said that there is a threat to the federal capital city at this point.
He bemoaned the fact that bandits had established cells in the Kubwa and Bwari districts and had invaded the FCT.
He said this just before the Senate postponed until next week its meeting with the leaders of security services.
The Chief of Defence Staff and National Security Advisor Nuhu Ribadu’s absence was the reason given by Akpabio for the adjournment.
Akpabio said:
“The situation is worrisome in Agatu, in Taraba, Oyo, Plateau, Mangu, Bokkos, Barkin Ladi. We also heard about the infiltration (of bandits) into the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in places like Kubwa and Bwari.
“We have heard reports that they have cells where they are congregating. We’ve also heard the efforts of the security chiefs and the security agencies but reports are becoming worrisome and we decided to invite you to brief us on the efforts to tackle this menace. The Senate is of the view that the FCT is under threat.”
Residents in the FCT’s Bwari and Kubwa districts have recently been the target of bandit attacks.
Some were unfortunate enough to be slain after a ransom was paid, while others were abducted.
The FCT minister, Nyesom Wike, had promised to render Abuja uninhabitable for criminals in the midst of the tragedy.
According to Wike, efforts are still being made to expel the criminal elements from Abuja.
