Babatunde Fashola, the immediate past Minister of Works and Housing, claims that the parliamentary system of governance drove Nigeria into a “unwarranted disaster” when it was in place.
Fashola made the remarks during the 30th anniversary of Yusuf Ali & Co. (Ghalib Chambers), a legal business, on Saturday in Ilorin, Kwara State.
There has recently been a call for the country to reinstate its parliamentary system of governance.
Nigeria utilised the system of government from 1960 to 1963.
Recall that in February 2024, a bill attempting to establish the parliamentary system failed to pass its first reading in the House of Representatives.
The bill was sponsored by 60 legislators who said that 2031 is the projected year for the transition to the system of government.
Speaking on the situation, Fashola encouraged supporters to consider the roots of its “collapse” in the First Republic and determine if the concerns “had been sorted out or not”.
He went on to say that the system had “failed” the country and that only good governance could improve Nigeria.
“They should reflect on whether the reasons which caused its collapse in the First Republic had been sorted out, ” the former minister added.
The parliamentary system is a style of government in which the party with the most seats in the legislature forms the government, with its leader serving as prime minister.
