South Africans Drag Grammy Winner Tyla for Defending Nigerian Model Chidimma Adetshina Amid Controversy

Grammy-winning singer Tyla is facing severe backlash from South Africans after she publicly supported Nigerian model Chidimma Adetshina, who recently won the Miss South Africa beauty pageant.

The win sparked controversy as South Africans questioned Adetshina’s citizenship due to her mixed heritage—being born to a South African mother and a Nigerian father.

The controversy deepened when South African Home Affairs conducted an investigation and suggested that Adetshina’s mother might have stolen the identity of a South African woman, leading to Chidimma’s withdrawal from the competition. Despite the uproar, Tyla took to Twitter to defend Adetshina, condemning the bullying directed at her.

“Disappointed that this happened to her, but wish you all the best, girl. Kill it. I will always stand with South Africans; I just feel regardless of the opinions, she was bullied, and that’s what I don’t stand for,” Tyla tweeted.

However, her stance did not sit well with many South Africans, who quickly flooded her comment section with harsh criticism. Many fans expressed their disappointment, pointing out how they had supported Tyla when she faced bullying from Nigerians and Americans, only for her to defend a controversial figure like Adetshina.

Some notable comments include:

– “We supported you when Nigerians bullied you. We supported you when Americans bullied you about your identity crisis. And this is how you thank us?” wrote one user.
– “Sometimes you have to stay silent,” another user cautioned.
– “South Africans should have let Americans cook you,” one commenter harshly stated.

Tyla, who rose to fame with her hit song “Water” and later won a Grammy, has made a name for herself in the international music scene, collaborating with notable artists like Nigerian singer Tems. In a past interview, Tyla praised Tems as a talented artist and a force in the industry. Tyla’s openness to working with Nigerian singers, including frequent hangouts with Ayra Starr, has led to comparisons between the two, particularly in their fashion sense.
