President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Rena Wakama for becoming the top coach in the women’s basketball event at the 2024 Olympic Games.

Wakama, the D’Tigress head coach, guided the Nigerian team to an unprecedented quarterfinal appearance at the Games before falling to the United States.

D’Tigress created history by being the first African team to reach the Olympic quarterfinals.

Ajuri Ngelale, the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, issued a statement on Monday in response to the situation.

The President said:

“The recognition of Ms. Wakama, 32, by the International Basketball Federation, FIBA, further accents her well established leadership qualities and dedication to excellence.

“The President also commends the team, and all those who played a part in the unprecedented feat at the Olympics, enjoining them not to relent or become crestfallen but to remain resilient and determined for greatness.

“The President further thanks the Nigerian contingent and wished them success in their respective endeavours.”
