The Nigerian Navy handed over 72 bags of Cannabis sativa, each weighing 40kg, as well as four apprehended individuals, to the NDLEA’s Marine Command.
On Tuesday, the Base Information Officer of the Nigerian Navy Ship, NNS BEECROFT, Lt. Hussaini Ibrahim, released a statement stating that the Navy had turned over three Ghanaians and one Beninese.
NNS BEECROFT commander Commodore Rafiu Oladejo, represented by Navy Capt. Mutalib Raji, stated that the cannabis sativa consignments were intercepted by the Quick Response Team on August 25, 2024.
According to him, the operation was carried out in response to reliable and actionable intelligence acquired by NNS BEECROFT about suspicious actions involving some criminal groups in the Lekki Beach area.
This, he explained, triggered the team’s deployment to the region for an intense operation, which resulted in the seizure of 72 bags of cannabis sativa weighing more than 2,880 kg.
He stated that the endeavour was in response to the Chief of Naval Staff’s Strategic Directive, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, to maintain a safe and secure marine environment for economic growth.
He said:
“The team arrested three Ghanaians, namely Godswill Zevor, Monday Kpomeja, Gbega Agbeko and a Beninois, Elugbe Philip.
“Perpetrators of illicit drugs are warned to desist from such acts as NNS BEECROFT will continue to pursue every criminal element operating within its area of operation.
“This successful operation is a testament to the unrelenting efforts of NNS BEECROFT to curtail the spread and use of illicit drugs among teeming youths, which negatively affect their health and threaten national security.”
