Tension as NLC president, Ajaero honours police summon

Tensions are high in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, and other Nigerian states as President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, honours police’s summons today, Thursday.

The news comes as the NLC announced plans to hold a statewide solidarity demonstration in response to Nigerian police inviting Ajaero to face charges of terrorism funding.

The NLC General Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja, sent a notification on Wednesday outlining the action.

The NLC asked its affiliate and state councils to organize their members in Abuja and around the country to demonstrate solidarity.

The circular partially reads:

“In response to the recent summons by the Nigeria Police Force for our President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, to appear for interrogation on trumped-up charges on Thursday, August 29, 2024, we call on all NLC affiliates and state councils to mobilize their members in Abuja and across the states to show solidarity.

“Details for Participation: In Abuja: All CWC members resident in Abuja and other members are expected to assemble at the National Headquarters of the Nigeria Labour Congress by 8am on Thursday, August 29, 2024, to accompany the President to the police for the scheduled interaction.”

Recall that the police had already ordered Ajaero to appear before them on August 20, 2024, for suspected involvement in terrorism funding, cybercrime, subversion, criminal conspiracy, and treasonable felony.

However, Ajaero, through his lawyer, Femi Falana, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, then wrote to the police, requesting that the meeting be rescheduled for August 29 because he was unavailable on August 20.

Recall that Ajaero’s invitation followed a night raid by police on the NLC national secretariat in Abuja.

The police said they raided a portion of the NLC offices to find seditious items in connection with the recent statewide #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria demonstration.
