The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has voiced concern about a troubling video allegation on Facebook saying that convicts at the Afokang Custodial Centre in Calabar are exposed to cruel treatment, including being fed improperly cooked beans for breakfast.

According to a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Alao Babatunde, the minister viewed the occurrence as a significant violation of the standards of care and decency to which detainees are entitled.

The Interior Minister then ordered a thorough and immediate inquiry into the situation, warning those involved that they would be held accountable, while also warning that any gaps in the quality of food, cleanliness, or inmate care would not be permitted.

Tuunji-Ojo believes the Nigeria Correctional Service must treat convicts with the dignity and respect they deserve.

According to the Interior Minister’s statement:

”The findings of the investigation will be made public, and necessary disciplinary actions will be taken.”
