In what appears to be a desperate effort, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced the results of Saturday’s gubernatorial election in Edo State.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is the sole organization empowered under the Constitution and the 2022 Electoral Act to declare election results.
However, PDP governors organized a news conference on Sunday, ahead of INEC’s collation of results at its central Collation Centre in Benin City, to declare the Edo gubernatorial election results.
Addressing the press, Adamawa State Governor Umaru Fintiri, backed by other party governors, indicated that the statistics they revealed came from “our collation agent, which was ongoing before INEC disrupted the process.”
According to reports, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are now embroiled in a close contest for governorship in Edo State.
On Sunday morning, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had posted around 97 percent of the results from 4,519 polling units to its Results Viewing (IReV) webpage.
The results showed that Asue Ighodalo of the PDP and his APC counterpart, Senator Monday Okpebholo, are in a close contest.
According to the results from INEC’s IReV portal, the PDP candidate leads in the Edo South Senatorial District, while the APC candidate leads in the Edo North Senatorial District.
