G7 Foreign ministers are expected to meet to seek a consensus on the International Criminal Court of Justice’s (ICC) recent arrest order for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, who is hosting the two-day summit in the small Italian town of Fiuggi, said Monday that he does not believe getting an agreement on the arrest warrant will be difficult.
“It is not an urgent or genuine problem. “I don’t think Netanyahu will come to Italy or anywhere else,” he told the Italian daily Corriere della Sera before the meeting.
The ICC issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Israel’s recently ousted defence minister, Yoav Gallant, on Thursday.
The order, which also touched Hamas military chief Mohammed Deif, was issued in response to allegations of war crimes committed during the Gaza battle.
Israel’s allies criticized the decision, and ICC member nations were usually required to implement the arrest orders, albeit there is a dispute about how to handle Netanyahu’s case.
