The contentious Tax Reform Bills are a good deal for all Nigerians, according to academic Ahmad Abubakar Gumi, despite strong opposition from Northern politicians and an Islamic cleric.

Northern governors, lawmakers, and traditional leaders have persisted in opposing the legislation, saying that if they are enacted, the area will become impoverished.

A conflict between Southern and Northern stakeholders has been sparked by the Northern leaders’ position.

Since the legislation passed a second reading in the upper parliamentary chamber on Thursday, they have generated new controversy.

A well-known Islamic cleric, Gumi, discussed the issue with the DAILY POST on Tuesday, saying that the tax bill is a good deal for everyone.

However, Gumi stated that the Value Added Tax, which is the most controversial aspect of the laws, should be revisited.

When asked about his view on the issue around the legislation, Gumi simply replied:

“I believe the contentious VAT issue is the only part that needs to be reviewed; otherwise, it is a good package for all.”
