Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has criticized the Nigerian Police Force for compelling vehicle owners to obtain third-party insurance.
In a post on his official X handle on Monday, Sani argued that vehicle insurance should be a matter of personal choice rather than a mandatory requirement imposed by law enforcement authorities.
His statement comes in response to the Nigerian Police Force’s ongoing enforcement of the third-party vehicle insurance policy across various states.
“Forcing people to insure their vehicles is wrong. It should be a personal choice if a person wants to insure their vehicle or not. Insurance guys just want to drag people to their offices,” he tweeted.
The initiative, which took effect on February 1, 2025, follows directives from the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, mandating that all motorists present valid insurance certificates when requested by law enforcement officers.
The police insist that the policy is necessary to safeguard vehicle owners, road users, and accident victims by ensuring financial protection in cases of damage or injury.
Motorists who fail to present valid third-party insurance risk having their vehicles impounded, with possible prosecution if they fail to comply within a given timeframe.
However, critics, including Sani, argue that making insurance compulsory through police enforcement is excessive and burdensome for Nigerians already struggling with economic hardship.
