Trump signs executive order requiring proof of citizenship for voters

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order mandating that voters provide proof of U.S. citizenship and barring states from counting mail-in ballots received after Election Day.

The order also seeks to strip federal funding from states that fail to comply.

Trump, who has long questioned the integrity of the U.S. electoral system, continues to claim that his 2020 loss to Democratic President Joe Biden was due to widespread fraud. He and his Republican allies have also alleged significant voting by non-citizens, a claim that is largely unproven and rarely documented.

Last year, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives passed a bill banning non-citizens from registering to vote in federal elections—a practice that is already illegal. The new executive order aims to reinforce similar restrictions.

“We’ve got to straighten out our elections. This country is so sick because of the elections, the fake elections and the bad elections. We’re going to straighten that out one way or the other,” Trump said while signing the order at the White House.
