The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed the arrest of social media activist Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, and stated that he will soon be charged to court.
The agency disclosed that the controversial figure was apprehended over alleged involvement in cybercrime and other related offences.
In a statement released on Monday, the EFCC said that Otse’s arrest followed a series of petitions received by the commission accusing him of using social media platforms to engage in defamatory content and online harassment under false pretences.
According to the commission, preliminary investigations have established a prima facie case against him, prompting further legal action.
The EFCC emphasised that the arrest was not politically motivated but was based on credible intelligence and complaints submitted by aggrieved parties.
The agency noted that VeryDarkMan would be arraigned in court as soon as investigations are concluded and charges are formally filed.
This development comes amid widespread calls for his release by supporters and civil rights advocates, who argue that his detention is an attempt to silence his critical voice on social issues.
Protests erupted in Abuja earlier the same day, with demonstrators demanding his immediate release and accusing authorities of cracking down on free speech. Despite public pressure, the EFCC has maintained that the case will follow due legal process.
The commission urged Nigerians to allow the law to take its course while reiterating its commitment to upholding justice and fairness. VeryDarkMan remains in custody pending further legal proceedings.
