In a major political shift, all members of the House of Representatives from Delta State elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The lawmakers officially announced their defection during Tuesday’s plenary session, marking a significant blow to the PDP in one of its traditional strongholds.
Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, read the letters of defection submitted by the lawmakers, in which they cited internal divisions and a lack of direction within the PDP as key reasons for their decision.
According to them, the party no longer represents the ideals and aspirations that prompted them to seek public office, prompting their move to the ruling APC.
The defectors expressed confidence in the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC’s vision for Nigeria.
They said their decision to join the ruling party was motivated by a desire to align with the federal government’s development agenda and to ensure that their constituencies benefit from ongoing national programs and policies.
The mass defection has generated significant political debate, with supporters of the APC celebrating it as a strategic gain, while PDP loyalists have described the move as opportunistic and a betrayal of voter trust.
Political analysts believe the development could reshape the balance of power in Delta State ahead of the next election cycle. This event also reflects a broader trend of shifting political alliances across Nigeria, as lawmakers and politicians reassess their affiliations in response to evolving political dynamics at the national level.
