Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, and Nasir El-Rufai, the former Governor of Kaduna State, recently met in the United States during the 11th Annual Cambridge Africa Together Conference held at St. John’s College, University of Cambridge.
El-Rufai was one of the prominent speakers at the event, which brought together a wide range of African leaders, scholars, and influential figures dedicated to advancing the continent’s development.
This meeting has caught significant attention, particularly due to the political backgrounds of the two leaders. El-Rufai, who previously served as a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), recently defected to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
Obi, having contested the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party, is now part of an emerging coalition with El-Rufai and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. This coalition seeks to challenge the leadership of President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential race.
There have been speculations that the coalition might run on the SDP platform, with El-Rufai positioning himself as a potential placeholder for Atiku Abubakar in the party’s leadership.
Their political alliance is particularly noteworthy as both Obi and El-Rufai come from distinct political backgrounds, highlighting the evolving and often surprising dynamics within Nigeria’s political landscape.
