Security expert Adamu warns government over porous Nigerian borders and inadequate security measures

Security expert Kabiru Adamu has raised serious concerns about the porous nature of Nigeria’s borders and criticized the government for not doing enough to strengthen border security.

Speaking on Channels Television, Adamu addressed the ongoing killings in various Nigerian communities, which have been linked to foreign cattle rearers by both government officials and the military.

Adamu emphasized that Nigeria’s borders remain highly vulnerable, and the government is failing in its responsibility to secure them effectively. He expressed frustration over what he described as political posturing and excuses, stressing that the situation demands urgent action.

He pointed out that while transhumance—the seasonal movement of livestock—is permitted within the ECOWAS region, most countries have systems to monitor and regulate this movement. Nigeria, however, lacks such mechanisms despite facing some of the worst security challenges in the region.

Adamu called for accountability from government agencies tasked with border security, urging the National Assembly to use its oversight powers to ensure these departments fulfill their duties. He warned against placing all the responsibility on the military, which he believes has been overburdened, while other ministries and agencies involved in security have been neglected.

He explained that border management is not solely a military responsibility, and if the military reports incursions, it is crucial to examine the performance of the other agencies involved. Adamu concluded by urging swift action to address these gaps in security to prevent further attacks and incursions.
