The Edo State Police Command has arrested 28 individuals suspected of involvement in cult-related activities following a coordinated house-to-house operation in Benin City.

The raids, which took place on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, between 4:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m., were part of the state’s ongoing efforts to combat cultism and related crimes.

According to Police Public Relations Officer Moses Yamu, the operation targeted known criminal hideouts within the city.

After the arrests, the suspects underwent professional screening, which led to 19 individuals being charged in court for their alleged involvement in cult activities. Additionally, three suspects confessed to being members of the Eiye and Aye confraternities and have also been arraigned.

The Edo State Police Commissioner, Monday Agbonika, reiterated the command’s commitment to eradicating cultism in the state.

He issued a stern warning to cult members, urging them to renounce their affiliations and embrace lawful conduct or face the full consequences of the law as stipulated in the Edo State Secret Cult and Other Related Activities (Prohibition) Law.

This police operation is part of a broader strategy by the police to enhance visibility policing, engage with communities, and conduct sustained raids on criminal hideouts. The goal is to significantly reduce, if not eliminate, cult-related violence and activities in Edo State.
