Insecurity prompts NURTW to suspend travel on Turare-Yantumaki-Marabar-Kankara route

The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has announced an immediate suspension of all passenger travel along the Turare-Yantumaki-Marabar-Kankara route due to escalating security concerns.

This decision comes after recent reports of armed attacks and kidnappings targeting commercial vehicles in the area, creating panic among drivers and commuters.

Union officials stated that the suspension was a necessary safety measure to protect both passengers and transport operators from potential harm.

The route, which connects several communities in Katsina State, has seen increased criminal activity in recent weeks, with bandits frequently ambushing vehicles.

The NURTW emphasised that operations would only resume once security agencies guarantee the safety of road users.

Residents have expressed mixed reactions to the development. While many support the decision as a precautionary measure, others worry about the economic impact, as the suspension disrupts transportation of goods and limits access to markets and essential services. Commuters are now forced to seek alternative, often longer routes, leading to increased travel costs and inconvenience.

Security authorities have acknowledged the growing threats along the route and assured the public that efforts are underway to restore order.

Military and police personnel have been deployed to conduct clearance operations and patrols in the affected areas.

However, the NURTW maintains that normal operations will not resume until there is a significant improvement in the security situation.

The union has advised travellers to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies while calling on the government to intensify efforts in addressing the broader insecurity challenges in the region.
