Minister of Works, David Umahi, has voiced strong dissatisfaction over the delayed completion of the Enugu-Onitsha expressway rehabilitation project, describing the current pace of work as unacceptable.

During an unscheduled inspection tour of the critical highway, Umahi expressed disappointment with contractors handling various sections of the road, warning that the federal government would not tolerate further delays in delivering the vital infrastructure.

The 110-kilometre expressway, which serves as a major economic artery connecting Southeast states, has been under reconstruction for several years.

Thousands of motorists and commuters continue to endure hardship due to the poor condition of sections of the road, with frequent accidents and traffic gridlocks becoming commonplace. Umahi emphasised that the project’s completion would significantly boost regional commerce and ease transportation challenges when finished.

The minister directed contractors to immediately increase their workforce and equipment deployment to meet revised deadlines. He warned that the government would not hesitate to terminate contracts and engage more competent firms if performance fails to improve.

Umahi also instructed ministry officials to intensify supervision and provide weekly progress reports to ensure compliance with project specifications and timelines.

Residents and road users have welcomed the minister’s intervention, expressing hope that it would finally accelerate the long-delayed project. Business owners along the route, in particular, highlighted how the poor road conditions have negatively affected economic activities and increased transportation costs.

The Works Ministry assured that despite current challenges, the Enugu-Onitsha expressway remains a priority project that will be delivered to the highest standards.
