According to the Minority Leader, Hon. Lukman Adeleye, Ogun State House of Assembly continues to face significant operational challenges, leaving it heavily reliant on the state government for basic functions.
Speaking during a legislative session, Adeleye expressed concern over the assembly’s inability to operate independently, citing persistent issues with funding and administrative support that have hindered effective lawmaking.
Adeleye revealed that the legislative body often struggles to carry out its constitutional duties due to delays in budgetary allocations and insufficient resources.
He emphasised that this dependence on the executive branch undermines the principle of separation of powers and weakens the assembly’s oversight functions. “A legislature that cannot fund its activities cannot effectively check the executive or represent the people’s interests,” he stated.
The minority leader called for urgent reforms to strengthen the assembly’s autonomy, including direct control over its budget and improved administrative structures.
He warned that without these changes, the assembly risks becoming a mere extension of the governor’s office rather than an independent arm of government.
Other lawmakers echoed Minority Leader’s concerns, noting that the situation has persisted for years despite repeated appeals to the state government. Some members disclosed that committee investigations and constituency projects have been stalled due to funding constraints.
