Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has observed that the team continues to play with the same tactical identity under new manager Xabi Alonso as they did under former coach Carlo Ancelotti.
The Belgian shot-stopper, who recently returned from a long-term injury, noted that Alonso has maintained the balanced, possession-based approach that became synonymous with Ancelotti’s successful tenure at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Courtois explained that while every manager brings subtle changes, the core philosophy at Madrid remains focused on controlling games through measured buildup play and quick transitions.
He praised Alonso for seamlessly adapting to the club’s expectations while also introducing his refinements to the system. The goalkeeper highlighted that the team’s defensive organisation and attacking fluidity still reflect the principles instilled during Ancelotti’s reign, which delivered multiple trophies, including two Champions League titles.
The former Chelsea keeper also acknowledged Alonso’s influence in fostering a strong team spirit, much like Ancelotti’s man-management style. He pointed out that the new coach has earned the players’ respect through his deep understanding of the club’s culture, having been a key midfielder for Madrid during his playing days.
Fans have welcomed the continuity in playing style, as it has allowed star players like Vinícius Júnior and Jude Bellingham to thrive in familiar roles.
Courtois emphasised that while evolution is natural in football, retaining the club’s identity has been crucial in maintaining consistency. With Alonso at the helm, Madrid remains competitive on all fronts, proving that successful foundations can endure beyond a single managerial era.
