Human rights lawyer Femi Falana has strongly criticised the Nigerian government for its failure to prosecute perpetrators of violent attacks in Benue State, describing the situation as “a national disgrace.”
The senior advocate expressed frustration over the continued bloodshed in the state without any meaningful legal consequences for those responsible.
Falana highlighted the recurring attacks on Benue communities by suspected herdsmen, which have resulted in hundreds of deaths and the displacement of thousands of people over the years.
He questioned why no significant arrests or prosecutions have been made despite the frequency of these violent incidents. According to him, the government’s inaction has created a culture of impunity, allowing the cycle of violence to persist.
The legal luminary called on security agencies to thoroughly investigate the killings and bring the perpetrators to justice.
He also urged the federal government to demonstrate stronger political will in addressing the security challenges in Benue and other conflict-affected states. Falana emphasised that without accountability, peace and reconciliation efforts would remain ineffective.
Furthermore, he advised victims’ families and civil society organisations to explore legal options, including approaching the courts to compel authorities to take action. His remarks come amid growing public outcry over the worsening security situation in several parts of the country.
Falana’s statement adds to the mounting pressure on the government to take concrete steps to end the violence and ensure justice for victims and their families.
