The Niger State Government has directed the immediate shutdown of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU) in Lapai, citing security concerns in the state.
The decision was announced on Tuesday following an emergency security council meeting chaired by Governor Mohammed Umar Bago at the Government House in Minna.
In a statement released by the Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Usman, the closure affects all academic activities, including ongoing examinations. Students were instructed to vacate the campus immediately, while staff members were directed to comply with the shutdown order until further notice.
The government did not specify a timeline for the university’s reopening but assured that the situation would be reviewed as security conditions improve.
The closure comes amid rising security challenges in Niger State, with recent bandit attacks occurring in several local government areas. While Lapai has not experienced direct attacks, authorities explained the precautionary measure was necessary to protect students and staff from potential threats.
IBBU management has been instructed to make alternative arrangements for academic activities, including possible virtual learning options during the closure.
Parents and guardians have expressed mixed reactions to the sudden closure, with some supporting the safety-first approach while others raised concerns about academic disruptions in IBBU.
The state government has pledged to enhance security measures around all educational institutions and assured residents of its commitment to restoring normalcy across the state. Security agencies have been deployed to ensure the orderly evacuation of students from the campus.
