Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has initiated the first phase of a rural electrification project by distributing 500 transformers across the state’s 44 local government areas.

The initiative, unveiled on Sunday, seeks to address chronic power shortages that have stifled small businesses and hindered socio-economic development in rural communities.

During the flag-off ceremony, Governor Yusuf emphasized that the transformer distribution represents a critical component of his administration’s strategy to revitalize industrial growth and stimulate economic activity.

He explained that improved electricity access would not only support businesses but also enhance security by illuminating previously dark neighborhoods. The governor described the project as a fulfillment of his campaign promise to prioritize infrastructure development for both urban and rural areas.

Yusuf urged community stakeholders to take ownership of the facilities, directing local government chairmen to form committees responsible for safeguarding and maintaining the transformers.

“This initiative marks a significant step in our rural electrification program,” he stated. “Beyond infrastructure provision, it demonstrates our commitment to creating an enabling environment for industrial growth and improved living standards.”

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to rebuilding Kano’s power infrastructure, noting that reliable electricity remains fundamental to sustainable development.

“We believe stable power supply will catalyze economic expansion and improve citizens’ welfare,” Yusuf added. The current distribution constitutes the first phase of the intervention, with further electrification projects expected as part of the state’s broader energy sector reforms.

The initiative has been welcomed by residents who have long endured erratic power supply, particularly in remote areas where electricity deficits have constrained productive activities and compromised nighttime security.

Local business owners anticipate the improved power infrastructure will reduce operational costs and boost productivity across rural economies.
