Nigerian hip-hop legend M.I. Abaga has drawn parallels between veteran rapper Eedris Abdulkareem, Grammy-winning artist Burna Boy, and controversial social media activist VeryDarkMan, stating that all three share a common trait—fearlessness in speaking their minds.

The acclaimed rapper made these remarks during a recent episode of the Menism podcast, where he discussed his early inspirations in the music industry.

Reflecting on his journey into rap, M.I emphasised the importance of acknowledging those who paved the way for younger artists. He expressed frustration when emerging talents claim to have no predecessors, stating,

I don’t like it when people say no one paved the way for them. He credited his love for rap music as his initial motivation, but also highlighted the influence of Nigerian rap pioneers like Eldee The Don and Ruggedman, who brought a fresh dynamic to the industry.

However, M.I. Abaga particularly focused on Eedris Abdulkareem, comparing his impact to that of modern-day stars like Burna Boy and Rema. He described Eedris as having the same electrifying energy that Rema possesses today, but with the bold, unfiltered approach reminiscent of Burna Boy and VeryDarkMan.

Eedris was just like Rema, M.I. said. But thinking about it now, I’d say he was more like Burna Boy and VDM—he would just say something, put it out there, and everyone would sing along.

He cited Eedris’s hit track Mr Lecturer and other socially conscious songs as examples of his ability to spark conversations through music.

According to M.I. Abaga, Eedris’s fearless attitude, similar to Burna Boy’s outspoken nature and VeryDarkMan’s controversial takes, made him a standout figure in Nigerian pop culture. The rapper’s comments underscore the enduring influence of artists who combine talent with activism, shaping the industry for future generations.
