The Anambra State Government has approved the sum of N2,835,150,000 for the second phase of its youth empowerment initiative, “One Youth Two Skills,” aimed at equipping young people with vocational training and startup capital.
The approval was granted during the 15th State Executive Council meeting held at the Government House in Awka.
According to a statement by the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, the program is designed to train participants in two marketable skills each, after which they will receive financial support to establish their businesses.
The initiative builds on the success of its first phase, which produced over 1,000 millionaires among the 7,163 graduates who excelled in 65 different skill areas. An additional 235 apprentices from the state’s Local Enterprise Development program also completed their training successfully.
The approved funds will cover various aspects of the program, including N2.5 billion for business financing, N141.9 million for cooperative startups, N73.2 million for graduation and certification, and N31 million for mentorship. A separate N500,000 was allocated as support for a bereaved family.
In addition to the youth empowerment scheme, the council also awarded contracts for the Awka City Park project, which is expected to enhance the state capital’s aesthetics while providing recreational, social, and economic benefits. Work on the park has already commenced.
The state government reaffirmed its commitment to youth development, emphasising that the second phase of the program will be even more impactful in reducing unemployment and fostering entrepreneurship.
