The Zamfara State government has provided further clarification on its contentious move to involve vigilante operatives from Borno State in its fight against banditry.
Hon. Iliyasu Buhari Maijega, Special Adviser on Political Matters to Governor Dauda Lawal, stated that the decision was made out of necessity to strengthen local security efforts and intensify the battle against armed criminals.
Maijega, speaking to journalists on the state’s worsening security situation, emphasised Governor Lawal’s dedication to restoring peace since taking office. “This administration has remained steadfast in its commitment to tackling insecurity from day one,” he said.
“Shortly after assuming office, Governor Lawal held meetings with security chiefs in Abuja, and I can confirm he has engaged with them six times so far in search of lasting solutions.”
He clarified that the vigilantes from Borno were not brought in to replace Zamfara’s existing security forces but to support the state’s Community Protection Guards (CPGs), who are already active in the region.
Maijega stressed that while the state government is doing its part, federal intervention remains crucial. “The people of Zamfara are not asking for much—security is their top priority,” he said, urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to increase federal support and fulfil his pledge to end banditry by December 2025.
With a by-election approaching in the Kaura Namoda South constituency, Maijega also accused opposition parties of planning to influence the poll through vote-buying.
“Those scheming to manipulate the election with financial inducements will be disgraced,” he warned, asserting that Zamfara’s voters prioritise good governance over short-term handouts.
Expressing confidence in the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Maijega cited recent achievements in healthcare and infrastructure as evidence of the administration’s commitment to delivering on its promises. He maintained that the PDP would retain the seat, reflecting public satisfaction with the government’s performance.
