The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has stated that it is premature to determine who will emerge as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.
Bolaji Abdullahi, the party’s interim National Publicity Secretary, emphasised that the ADC is currently prioritising the strengthening of its internal structures rather than engaging in early discussions about potential flagbearers.
Speaking in Abuja on Saturday, Abdullahi clarified that the party has not yet considered any aspirants for the presidential race and remains fully committed to building a formidable political organisation.
He dismissed speculations about preferred candidates, stating that the ADC’s immediate goal is to establish a solid foundation capable of fulfilling its political objectives.
“We don’t have any favourite aspirants or candidates at this stage, and we are not holding any discussions about the party’s flagbearer,” Abdullahi said. “It is simply too early for such conversations. Our primary focus is to develop a strong and viable political party that can effectively carry out its mission.”
Despite the ADC’s stance, political observers have linked several high-profile figures to the party’s potential presidential ticket. Among those rumoured to be interested are former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi. However, none of these individuals have publicly declared their intentions to contest under the ADC’s banner.
The party’s cautious approach reflects its determination to avoid premature political manoeuvres and instead concentrate on consolidating its position as a credible alternative in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
As the 2027 elections draw nearer, the ADC aims to position itself as a viable platform for aspirants seeking to challenge the dominance of the ruling and major opposition parties.
