The Abia State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB) has established a committee to review the posting of the 5,300 newly recruited teachers to ensure married women, who make up 80% of the hires, are not assigned to schools far from their families.

The board’s executive chairman, Lydia Onuoha, announced this during a stakeholders’ meeting in Umuahia on Wednesday, noting that the teachers are expected to resume work on September 1, 2025.

Onuoha explained that the committee will collaborate with relevant stakeholders to ensure a smooth and fair posting process, urging both new and existing teachers to remain patient.

She emphasised the challenge of relocating married women away from their households, stating, *”We have a large percentage of applicants that are married women—eighty per cent—and this makes it difficult to post this group far from their families.”*

To address concerns, ASUBEB has opened a helpline for affected teachers. Additionally, Governor Alex Otti has approved provisions for educators posted to remote areas, including logistical support. The governor has also sanctioned the recruitment of security personnel for schools, a process that will involve local government mayors to enhance safety.

Mrs. Uzoamaka Amah-Mba, ASUBEB’s board secretary, affirmed that the recruitment committee ensured transparency, preventing any extortion of applicants. The measures aim to create a conducive work environment while maintaining fairness in teacher deployment across the state.
