Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has revealed that plans have been finalised for the immediate upgrade of the Umuahia Township Stadium to meet the required standards for Abia Warriors and other football teams.

The governor made this announcement on Wednesday during a visit by the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau, and his delegation at his country home in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area.

Governor Otti stated that the upgrade of the existing stadium is a short-term measure to provide a functional sporting facility while a more comprehensive long-term solution is being developed.

He disclosed that architectural designs are already underway for the construction of a modern “stadium city” in Umuahia, which will serve as a lasting solution for sporting activities in the state.

Emphasising the importance of sports in national unity, Otti described football and other sporting activities as vital tools for fostering cohesion among Nigerians.

He reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring that Abia State remains a leading force in sports development across the country. The governor also took the opportunity to commend President Bola Tinubu for the recent impressive performance of Nigeria’s Super Falcons in international competitions.

During the visit, NFF President Ibrahim Gusau praised Governor Otti for his unwavering support for sports development in Abia State, describing the state as the home of football in Nigeria.

He highlighted Abia’s historic achievements in African continental competitions and noted that the state’s contributions to Nigerian sports cannot be overlooked. Gusau also acknowledged Abia Warriors FC as one of the top three football clubs in the country under Otti’s leadership.

While appealing for the prompt renovation of the Umuahia Township Stadium, the NFF president pledged technical support to ensure the facility meets required standards. The collaboration between the state government and the NFF is expected to further boost football development in Abia and enhance opportunities for local talents.
